Calcasieu Parish is under a burn ban that was effective October 17, 2024.
While we do not take issuing or supporting a burn ban, our primary goal is protecting life and property from fire. I know many may question why it is required to issue burn bans; it is impossible for a volunteers to monitor every person making a decision to burn and ensure they are burning safely.
The past 2 weeks, Ward Six Fire Protection District No. One has responded to several fires that started from unsafe burning practices. Those unsafe practices included burning without adequate water supply, burning with winds to strong, leaving fires unattended.
Prescribed burns and agriculture burns following safe practices from Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry are not included in the burn ban.
Cooking fires and BBQ pits are also not included in the ban; however, disposing of hot coals and embers that start a fire could lead to the property owner being responsible for damages.
We appreciate every9ne for working together to protect our community, definitely we do not want to see a repeat of the 2023 wildfires.
